Burr Bits (also called rotary burrs) are small, hardened-steel or carbide cutting tools designed to remove material, shape and deburr workpieces in rotary tools such as die grinders, rotary handpieces or multi-tools.
Key Characteristics:
Material & Construction: Made from high-speed steel (HSS), tungsten-carbide or diamond-coated carbide for extreme hardness and wear resistance.
Cutting Profile: Available in a variety of head shapes—cylindrical, ball, oval, tree, flame, cone—each offering different access and cutting geometry.
Flute Patterns: Teeth are milled in single-cut (one set of parallel teeth) for smoother finishes or double-cut (cross-hatch pattern) for aggressive material removal and reduced vibration.
Shank Sizes: Commonly 3 mm, 6 mm or 1/8″ to fit standard collets and chucks.
High Speed Use: Designed for rotational speeds from about 10,000 rpm up to 30,000 rpm (or more), depending on material and bit diameter.
Common Uses:
Deburring & Edge Rounding: Removing sharp edges, flash and burrs after machining, stamping or casting.
Profiling & Carving: Shaping contours, reliefs and intricate details in metal, wood, plastic or composites.
Weld Cleaning: Grinding down weld beads and smoothing transitions between welded parts.
Porting & Polishing: Enlarging and finishing intake/exhaust ports in engine heads or fluid passages for improved flow.
Surface Preparation: Removing rust, paint or coatings in tight corners and recesses before finishing or painting.
