Glue Types Explained: PVA, Polyurethane, CA & Epoxy

Glue is one of the most important materials in woodworking. Choosing the right adhesive can mean the difference between a strong project and a failed joint.

PVA Glue (Wood Glue)

PVA is the most widely used woodworking glue. It’s affordable, easy to apply, and creates strong bonds when used correctly. PVA works best on tight-fitting joints and is perfect for furniture, shelving, and general DIY projects.

Polyurethane Glue

Polyurethane glue expands slightly as it cures, helping fill small gaps. It’s also waterproof, making it useful for outdoor projects. However, it can be messy and requires careful clamping.

CA Glue (Super Glue)

CA glue bonds very quickly and is often used for small repairs or quick fixes. Woodworkers also use it for stabilising cracks or holding small parts temporarily.

Epoxy

Epoxy consists of two components mixed together. It’s extremely strong and works well when filling large gaps or bonding difficult materials. Epoxy is also commonly used in decorative woodworking projects like river tables.
